THE BEST HIKING IN BIGHORN NATIONAL FOREST
Wyoming is renowned for its natural beauty, and the best way to experience all of it is by hiking through Bighorn National Forest. There are a variety of hikes to challenge all skill levels. We’ve highlighted some of the most sought after hikes near our inn, so you can come away with your own Story to tell.
Quarter Circle Trail
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 2.9 miles
Dog-Friendly: No
As the default easy hike near Story, Quarter Circle Trail is an adorable out and back trail with excellent views of the valley, the mountains, and the wildlife of Wyoming. It's one of the features of the Brinton Museum.
With a slight elevation gain divided throughout the entire trail, it makes for the perfect kid, senior, or casual hike. Bring your camera!

Story Penrose Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 6.9 miles
Dog-Friendly: Yes, on a leash
This iconic hike takes you up the mountains, and is designated for hiking and off-road ATVs. Because of this, the path is covered in loose rocks. Hikers should be aware of their surroundings and be prepared for some steep inclines, as the Story Penrose Trail doesn’t hold back with its difficult yet amazing views of peaks like Grandma’s Mountain.

South Piney Creek Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 2.5 miles
Dog-Friendly: Yes, even without a leash
This hike will take you through the gorge where South Piney Creek resides. It’s a short trek, but the cliffside walls are beautiful and can protect you from the sometimes brutal summer sun. It’s well maintained and is short and sweet for families of all ages.


Red Grade Trails Systems
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 2.8 miles
Dog-Friendly: Yes, with a leash
One of the easiest and most popular trails near Story, the Red Grade Trails offer gorgeous lookouts at a relaxing pace.It’s pretty common to see wildlife here, and some hikers have even seen black bears roaming the trail. For a well-marked, simple hike throughout all times of the year, come to the Red Grade Trails.

Solitude Trail 038
Difficulty: Hard
Distance: 57.9 miles
Dog-Friendly: Yes, with a leash
The Solitude Trail is an incredibly long and quiet backpacking trail that takes you through the heart of Bighorn National Forest. While you obviously don’t need to walk the whole way, the trail makes for a fun romp in the woods. It’s unlikely you’ll see many people out here because of the sheer size, though it’s a popular trail for hikers and fishing enthusiasts everywhere.
